MOVING TIPS
LET'S GET YOU READY TO GO!
Moving can often be viewed as a stressful and overwhelming task, but it doesn’t have to be with a proper plan and strategy. Follow our professional guidelines and tips below to get ready for move day. Your preparation for our arrival is essential for the most cost-effective and efficient move possible.
Start Packing Well Ahead of Time
Don’t wait until the week before you move to start packing your things. There are some items you can pack a couple of months before a move. For example, pack up out-of-season clothes, holiday decorations, china, stemware, and books.
Empty all contents of your furniture
Empty ALL the contents of ALL of the drawers of ALL of your furniture. This is a safety factor for our team, as well as your home and furniture. Furniture is not designed to be transported full of belongings. Not following these guidelines can lead to damage of your home and/or your furniture.
Electronics, fragile & high-value items
These items MUST be boxed, either by you or our team in order for us to transport them safely. We are more than happy to help pack these up, however, to keep your costs down, we highly recommend moving these personally in your own vehicle if and when possible. If not, This can add extensive time for us to prepare and ultimately the cost of your move.
EXAMPLES:
TV's, Computers, keyboards, monitors, printers, house plants, table lamps, lamp shades, light bulbs, coffee makers, toaster ovens, jewelry, antiques, etc.
Where to get boxes
Purchase at Home Depot, Lowes & Uhaul dealers. Focus on utilizing SMALL & MEDIUM cardboard boxes UNIFORM IN SIZING for the majority of packing . These stack nicely next to and on top of one another and keeps you organized before and after our arrival. It keeps us working efficiently AND you save money.
AVOID LARGE BOXES AND KEEP PLASTIC TUBS TO A MINIMUM.
Avoid random sized boxes for moving. Amazon, department, & liquor store boxes are a few examples of this. They will often slow down your move and actually cost your more in the long run.
Correctly Build Your Boxes
Tape 2 criss-cross strips on the bottom in the middle coming at least half way to the top of all 4 sides. Then, Flip the box upright and fill to capacity. Tape it shut with 2 more strips in the same criss-cross pattern. *IMPORTANT! - BE SURE THE TOP 2 STRIPS OF THE CRISS-CROSSED TAPE OVERLAP THE BOTTOM 2 STRIPS. TAPE STICKS WONDERFULLY TO ITSELF, BUT CAN BE UNRELIABLE WHEN ONLY APPLIED TO CARDBOARD.
How to pack boxes
SMALL BOXES - Ideal for books, magazines, glassware from the kitchen, office supplies & bathroom supplies.
MEDIUM BOXES - Ideal for clothing, shoes, tuperware, pots & pans
LARGE BOXES - Try to avoid these, but if you must, ideal for cookie sheet, board games, lamp shades, comforters
Label Your Boxes
Label boxes by the NEW HOME'S preferred room location with a general description of the contents. Label at least one SIDE of the box, not just the top. This keeps boxes visibly organized & efficient when stacked on top of each other.
Plates are less likely to break if they’re standing on edge inside the box. You also need to wrap each all glassware in paper and include plenty of stuffing on the bottoms, sides and in the corners of the box. Put so much stuffing inside the box that the glassware don’t have any room to shift around at all.

Clear the way
Make sure there are clear paths throughout your home when the movers arrive on move day. Do not stack boxes on furniture because typically the furniture will be loaded first. Don't have random loose items scattered on table tops. Setting up shop in the kitchen is usually a great place for you to keep things throughout your preparing for transition.
TIPS FOR FAMILIES
WITH CHILDREN
Prepare your kids
Several experts say how you handle the time leading up to the move has a big impact on how easily your kids adapt. Don’t focus on what will be different, focus more on what will be the same i.e., furniture, clothes and most importantly their toys.
Understand their fear
Even if your children are excited about the move, it is still difficult especially if they are moving away from someone they love. All children accept things at their own pace. Most experts estimate that it takes at least six months for kids to fully acclimate to their new life.
Set the right example
Your kids look to you, so be positive. Negativity rubs off on them, so watch what you say about your new home. Highlight all the good things about your new home so your kids will see them too.
Stay on schedule
Maintain as many of your old routines as possible. Provide as much familiarity as possible: maintaining the same daily routines in the same order as often as you can.
Let them decide
Let your children make some of the decisions especially about the layout and look of their bedrooms. If shopping for new bedding, window treatments ask them to weigh in.
Get to know neighbors
Throw a housewarming party or reach out to your Facebook friends and see if your connections are also connected to a new neighbor. Make friends with other moms by arriving a little earlier to events/school. It gives you an opportunity to start conversations; volunteer to be a room parent or work the concession stand at the little league field.
